PROMISE KEEPERS BACKGROUND
How We Started
On March 20, 1990, Bill McCartney (then University of Colorado head football coach) and his friend Dave Wardell, Ph.D., were on a three-hour car ride to a Fellowship of Christian Athletes meeting, when they first discussed the idea of filling a stadium with Christian men. Later that year, 72 men began to pray and fast about the concept of thousands of men coming together for the purpose of Christian discipleship. In July, 1991, 4,200 men gathered for the first Promise Keepers conference at the University of Colorado basketball arena. Since then, more than 2 million men have attended Promise Keepers (PK) stadium conferences.
Mission Statement
Promise Keepers is a Christ-centered ministry dedicated to
uniting men through vital relationships to become godly influences in their world.
More Than Stadium Events
The two-day stadium conferences around the nation enable thousands of men from around the nation and world to join together for worship, prayer, and teaching. While these conferences are the most visible part of Promise Keepers' work throughout the year, they represent only a part of the outreach and impact of the organization.
Seminars
Promise Keepers conducts hundreds of educational conferences
and seminars, including: Men's Ministry Leadership,Foundations for Effective
Men's Ministry, and Building Men of Integrity seminars. These workshops help
pastors, men's small group leaders, and men's ministry leaders develop a more effective
ministry to men in their respective communities and churches.
Local Small Groups
Across the country and around the world, thousands of small
groups of 5-10 men gather on a regular basis for Bible study and personal accountability.
In 1996, 19,590 local Promise Keepers volunteers served as liaisons between these groups
and PK, providing leadership and materials to these groups.
Resource Materials
Promise Keepers also develops and provides numerous resources for personal study and men's groups. These resources include audio/video recordings, radio programs, books, study guides, worship tapes, and Promise Keepers newsletters.
Support For Pastors
Finally, Promise Keepers actively builds support for clergy by motivating and encouraging laymen to actively support the mission of their church and to pray for and support their pastor(s).
Statement of Faith
1. We believe that there is one God eternally existing in
three persons: The Father, The Son, and The Holy Spirit.
2. We believe that the Bible is God's written revelation to man and that it is verbally inspired, authoritative, and without error in the original manuscripts.
3. We believe in the deity of Jesus Christ, His virgin
birth, sinless life, miracles, death on the cross to provide for our redemption, bodily
resurrection and ascension into heaven, present ministry of intercession for us, and His
return to earth in power and glory.
4. We believe in the personality and deity of the Holy
Spirit, that He performs the miracle of new birth in unbelievers and indwells believers,
enabling them to live godly lives.
5. We believe that man was created in the image of God, but
because of sin, was alienated from God. Only through faith, trusting in Christ alone for
salvation which was made possible by His death and resurrection, can that alienation be
removed.
